Cabo Wabo Margarita Recipe

From Cabo San Lucas

Although in Mexico we don’t celebrate 5 de Mayo as our friends in the States do, we don’t need too much convincing to have a celebration. For today’s 152 nd anniversary of the Battle at Puebla, we thought we would share with you a recipe for one of Cabo’s most popular drinks – margarita – but it gets even better; here is a Waborita, Cabo Wabo margarita recipe for you.

“Waborita” is one of the most popular cocktails at Cabo Wabo Cantina and easily one of the most recognized drinks in Cabo San Lucas. Known traditionally as a margarita, the Waborita features Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo tequila blended with Baja California’s signature Damiana liqueur and additional fresh ingredients that create a bold, smooth, and flavorful cocktail.

The Waborita can be served straight up in a martini glass, poured over ice, or blended as a frozen margarita, making it a versatile favorite whether you are poolside or out for the evening.

Damiana Liqueur is a light, herbal-based spirit made from the damiana plant that grows in Baja California, Mexico. The bottle is uniquely shaped and modeled after an Incan goddess, making it instantly recognizable and closely tied to the region’s identity.

To make one serving:

  • 1 ounce Cabo Wabo tequila
  • 1/2 ounce Damiana liqueur (substitute with extra orange liqueur if unavailable)
  • 1/2 ounce orange liqueur such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Splash of blue curaçao
  • Ice
  • Lime peel for garnish

Using fresh lime juice and quality spirits ensures a balanced and bright flavor.

  6. Strain into the chilled glass.
  7. Add a splash of blue curaçao and garnish with lime peel.

Tips to Elevate Your Cabo Wabo Margarita

  • Use fresh ingredients. Fresh lime juice dramatically improves the flavor compared to bottled juice.
  • Choose quality tequila. Cabo Wabo tequila delivers authenticity, but any high-quality blanco or silver tequila works.
  • Experiment with salt. Try chili-lime salt or smoked sea salt for a Baja-inspired twist.
  • Make it frozen. Blend all ingredients with ice for a smooth frozen margarita perfect for poolside gatherings.
